'Pintos' is star of product fair

CEBU, Philippines - Bogo City will open today their fair featuring the various products of the city.

The four-day fair will be held in the city bus terminal with the famous Pintos —made from ground corn, milk, butter, and wrapped in corn husk— taking center.

The festival coincides with the town fiesta replacing the Kuyayang Festival, which come from the traditional courtship dance of the area.

The activity is part of their upcoming fiesta on May 27 in honor of St. Vincent Ferrer, the patron saint of the city.

Fiesta-related-activities already started last week.

Tonight, the San Diego Dance Company will perform at the City Sports Complex for the Archdiocesan Shrine of Saint Vicente Ferrer (ASSVF) Night.

On Thursday, the very first Ms. Bogo Tourism will be crowned. A bankarera (boat race) competition will also be held at the Polambato Port on Friday afternoon.

Another highlight will be the Pintos Festival street dancing and final showdown on Saturday afternoon followed by the Mayor Junie’s Night with special guests, actress Iya Villania and TV host John Lapuz.

On the day of the fiesta celebration itself, the traditional dawn solemn procession will be headed by the ASSVF. The 4th Mayor Junie Martinez Motorcross Cup will be held near the New City Hall Complex.

Pintos Festival is the official festival of Bogo, joining other cities and municipalities in Cebu in displaying the colorful culture of Cebuanos.

Bogo City is named after a tree endemic in the area called “bogo,” the tree holds a special part in the history of the city. Local folklore says the city originated from a group of local traders who often met under a bogo tree at the heart of the city. –(FREEMAN)
