CEBU, Philippines - Amidst the criticisms suffered by some residents of a coastal barangay in Boljoon for mishandling a stranded whale shark, Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia chose to be more prudent in her reaction.
Instead of joining the netizens who condemned a certain Carinn Lestolis and the residents of Barangay North Granada in Boljoon, the governor pleaded to understand the locals’ behavior.
Garcia said the residents need more information on the proper handling of the whale shark that is abounding in the southern town of Oslob and the nearby municipalities.
The governor has already received a report from Boljoon Mayor Teresita Celis on the incident that has created uproar in the online community.
Lestolis was photographed sitting on top of the whale shark which was stranded in Boljoon. The picture, which was uploaded on Facebook, was subjected to heavy criticisms by the netizens.
The girl has already apologized for what she had done and claimed ignorance on the proper handling of the sea creature.
Garcia said that instead of looking at the negative side of the incident, the public should be thankful that the residents did not slaughter the whale shark.
She said this is already an indication that the people are becoming aware on how to protect the marine resources. The governor however said that more education is needed, especially on the proper handling.
“Yes, we understand the concern but can we also take into consideration the fact that this butanding is still alive and well,” Garcia said.
Garcia said that the people are already aware to protect marine resources but they still need to be taught on “etiquette relationship” of the whale shark.—(FREEMAN)
