Farmer found dead at mud pit

CEBU, Philippines - A 40-year-old farmer believed to have epilepsy drowned in a mud pit while watching over his carabao in Barangay Lutopan, Toledo City last Sunday afternoon.

Renegio Sabroso was last seen by his neighbors and relatives around 1pm leading his carabao to the mud pit located about 100 meters from his house.

SPO2 Jerry Trinidad of the Toledo City Police said that by 3pm, when Sabroso did not return home, his wife started looking for him.

Around 4pm, Sabroso’s neighbors found him at the mud pit with his head in the water, his nose and mouth filled with mud. The neighbors tried to rescue him but to no avail.

Police said that based on Bernardita’s statement, Sabroso was suffering from epilepsy and that there had been many instances when she had to assist him during ‘attacks.’

“Musugmat lang kuno unya bag-uhay lang sagunson na (It was only recently that the attacks have become frequent),” Tri-nidad said.

Bernardita suspected that her husband suffered an attack at the mud pit and drowned when his face got submerged in the water.

Sabroso’s remains lie at the Celestial Funeral Homes in Barangay Poblacion, Toledo City.  (FREEMAN)
