CEBU, Philippines - The city government will rent some P33 million worth of heavy equipment for road repairs, including backhoes, loaders, dump trucks, graders and rollers.
The equipment will be deployed to mountain barangays for resurfacing and clearing of landslide hit areas.
Councilor Roberto Cabarrubias, chairman of the City Council committee on infrastructure, said the mountain barangays badly need the heavy equipment because some roads remain impassable due to previous landslides.
The city’s own equipment can no longer be used due to old age.
Cabarrubias said the city has no choice but to rent the equipment until the brand new ones arrive in May. The new equipment is worth P89 million.
Cabarrubias said that there will be equipment to be deployed in the north and south districts.
In the north district, they will concentrate in the Binaliw-Agsungot road leading to Barangays Guba and Cambinocot. The roads have been damaged by landslides.
In the south district, the road from Barangay Sinsin to Sudlon I will be prioritized.
Most of the affected roads have caved in and would have to be paved and filled so that the surface will be of the same level.
Last month, the City Council ordered the temporary closure of the road bordering Barangays Agsungot and Binaliw up to the barangay proper of Guba due to the portions that caved in, which rendered the road dangerous for vehicles to pass.
The road is an access road to Binaliw, Agsungot, Mabini and Paril. (FREEMAN)
