CEBU, Philippines - The San Remigio passenger terminal at the Hagnaya Port will undergo renovation for the establishment of first class facilities to attract tourists to the town and the neighboring municipalities.
San Remigio Mayor Jay Olivar said that once renovated, the terminal will have a VIP Lounge. The entire passenger lounge will also be fully air-conditioned.
“We hope to finish the renovation before Holy Week,” the mayor said.
Cebu Fourth District Representative Benhur Salimbangon said San Remigio, located about three hours north of Cebu City, should serve as a “beautiful gate” to other municipalities.
Visitors of Malapascua Island off Daanbantayan town or to Bantayan Island, which is composed of Sta. Fe. Madridejos and Bantayan towns, pass through Hagnaya Port in San Remigio.
Salimbangon said he has already requested the Cebu Port Authority to repair the Roll-on, roll-off (RORO) port in San Remigio to accommodate more vessels.
It can be recalled that former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo visited the completion of the Hagnaya Port in 2009.
The project cost around P69 million wherein P33 million was spent for the first phase and another P36 million for the second phase.
The said amount was used for dredging of hard rock materials and installation of lighted markers at the said port.
The dredging is five meters depth, 40 meters in width and 2 kilometers in length.
There was a need to dredge the channel as vessels coming from Bantayan Island cannot go directly to the Hagnaya Port during low tide.
Salimbangon said the project has benefitted the more than 150,000 residents of Bantayan Island, as trading of eggs, meat and dried fish will flourished because of easier access to transportation. — (FREEMAN)
