CEBU, Philippines - The Cebu News Workers Multi-purpose Cooperative (Newscoop) yesterday recognized The FREEMAN for granting counterpart to its employees’ contribution to the said cooperative.
Newscoop manager Roberta Verano gave The FREEMAN General Manager Melandro Mendoza a copy of the approved board resolution giving the company due recognition for its “act of generosity and support” to its member-employees. The said resolution was approved by the Newscoop board of directors during its special session last September 9 held at the Marcelo B. Fernan Press Center in Sudlon, Barangay Lahug, Cebu City.
Newscoop, considered as the biggest cooperative of media workers all over the country, builds its capital resources through a monthly pledged contribution from all its members with The FREEMAN having the biggest chapter with 200 members.
This number multiplied after The FREEMAN started giving a P100 counterpart for its employees’ monthly contribution to the cooperative June last year. Hence, several of its non-Newscoop member workers enrolled to the said cooperative.
“(The) act does not only help member-employees increase their fixed deposits, but has also encouraged the others to become members of Newscoop for them to be entitled to such additional benefit. This act has also gained cognizance from other media companies, as well,” read the resolution.
Flora Mata of The FREEMAN said every month the company remits at least P14,000 to the Newscoop for this special benefit. (FREEMAN)
