Flowerpots a weapon vs illegal dumping

CEBU, Philippines - Personnel of the Cebu City Agriculture Office have started placing flowerpots in spots where people often dump their garbage after observing the pots discouraged dumping.

“Namatud-an namo nga epektibo ang among gihimo nga pagpamutang og mga tanom sa kanhi labayanan nila og basura… maikog tingali sila nga molabay og mga sagbot nga nindot na ang dapit,” said city agriculturist Julito Baclayon.

According to Baclayon one of these areas is along Gen. Maxilom Avenue near the Carreta cemetery. The place used to be a site where residents dumped their garbage.

Baclayon said although the task to enforce garbage segregation and to watch for unauthorized dumping belongs to the Department of Public Services, he has decided to contribute his share.

Baclayon also said his personnel planted thousands of Mahogany and Acacia trees beside the Transcentral Highway from Barangay Busay up to Barangay Taptap to help prevent soil erosion and landslides and to make the road beautiful.

He said the barangay officials were advised to help care for the trees and to prevent people from cutting them.

Those who wish to plant any kind of fruit trees in their properties can just ask them for plants and seedlings, Baclayon said.

Baclayon earlier suggested that the government officials should allow the public to cultivate idle public lands for agricultural purposes in order to help generate food for the public. - (THE FREEMAN)
