CEBU, Philippines - The Wonkwang Health Science University in Korea turned over 23 sets of computers to Martin Salimbangon Training Center in barangay Curva, Medellin a month after a memorandum of agreement was signed.
The agreement was signed between Cebu fourth district Rep. Benhur Salimbangon, Wonkwang president Kim In Jong and Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Tesda) Secretary Joel Villanueva.
The training center in Curva, Medellin was constructed by Salimbangon and named in honor of his late father, who served as barangay captain. It is under the management of TESDA.
Aside from the donation, Wonkwang will also provide repair services for the donated equipment, when necessary.
The computers have software to allow the students to learn Korean language to be able for them to have the basic skills to get hired in Korea.Lessons on Korean language will not only be helpful for work abroad, but also for local hiring because Medellin is host to some 200 Koreans who visit the town every week to play golf.
Aside from the existing Korean village in Medellin, another Korean investor is putting up world-class facilities in the town, including a hotel, spa, and another international golf course.
Medellin Mayor Ricardo Ramirez is pushing for the Korean investors to prioritize Medellin residents in the hiring of workers.
Salimbangon thanked the university and TESDA for choosing the training center as recipient of the computer facilities.
For his part, Kim assured TESDA and Salimbangon to hire qualified trainees from the center to work in Korea.
Salimbangon said students in other places in the fourth district who cannot afford to go to college can also enroll in vocational courses at the center.Salimbangon was also assured by Kim that they will soon donate for Medellin a building for health center complete with equipment. — (FREEMAN)
