CEBU, Philippines - Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) Director Melvin Ramon Buenafe admitted to the possibility that some policemen use recovered carnapped vehicles even if this is not allowed.
His admission surprised reporters, who asked him about policemen who were caught driving unregistered motorcycles and who could not present documents to Land Transportation Office (LTO) personnel.
According to Buenafe, it is possible that some policemen illegally use the recovered stolen vehicles as the CCPO does not have a safe place to store the recovered stolen vehicles.
These vehicles are supposedly endorsed to the PNP Highway Patrol Group for proper safekeeping.
Buenafe warns policemen against the legal consequences if are caught doing such illegal activity.
Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jesse M. Robredo had also given a stern warning to all police operatives that use recovered carnapped vehicles, as this constitutes grave misconduct that may subject them to summary dismissal proceedings.
Robredo’s warning was issued in the light of reports that some policemen use vehicles that were recovered during police operations.
He explained that this is unethical and illegal.
“We will definitely not tolerate cops who are doing this unacceptable practice in the police organization,” said the DILG secretary.
Robredo instructed PNP Chief Raul Bacalzo to post on the PNP website an inventory of recovered carnapped vehicles and to provide the DILG a copy of the said inventory for posting at the DILG website.
He also ordered the police units nationwide to implement the “No Plate, No Travel” policy of the LTO. (FREEMAN NEWS)
