Lawyer wants "safer" jail for Dumpit

CEBU, Philippines - The lawyer of the controversial police officer Adonis Dumpit plans to ask the court to allow the latter’s transfer to a safer detention facility.

Lawyer Pedro Leslie Salva said that Dumpit’s life is in danger at the Cebu City Jail because of the suspected criminals he had arrested before.

“Dumpit is unsafe in the Cebu City Jail, even the jail warden had said Dumpit is not safe, so we have to file a motion to transfer Dumpit,” Salva said.

Salva did not specify the detention facility he wishes Dumpit to be detained, saying wherever it will be as long as his client is safe.

Salva said he will be asking a copy of the video footages from a television network showing how the inmates violently reacted upon Dumpit’s arrival at the city jail the other day. Based on the footages it was allegedly clear that his client’s safety is in jeopardy.

“I will ask for the video tape of GMA-7 to support our claim that Dumpit is not safe the time Dumpit entered the jail last Monday,” Salva said.

Deputy jail warden Dennis Aliño admitted in earlier reports that some of the inmates chanted that they wanted to have Dumpit with them because they will kill him.

The Regional Trial Court earlier ordered to transfer Dumpit’s detention to city jail from the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group-7 headquarters. Judge Ester Veloso granted the prosecution’s urgent motion to transfer Dumpit because of the alleged special treatment given to him at the CIDG.

Private complainant Janeth Badana herself caught Dumpit out of the CIDG detention cell when she visited the Cebu City Police Office where the CIDG headquarters is located.

Badana took photos of Dumpit outside of the detention cell which convinced the court to transfer his detention to city jail. Dumpit is facing murder case for allegedly killing suspected robber Ronron Go in 2004. —(FREEMAN)
