VECO fixes library of San Fernando school

CEBU, Philippines - Thirty six employees of the Visayan Electric Company (VECO) took some time out from their daily chores to fix the library of an elementary school in the southern town of San Fernando.

The recipient of the recent project is the Greenhills Elementary School. The school has 482 students.

VECO Community Relations Head Eric Ching said the school qualified for the project because its library was no longer functioning as such. Prior to the intervention, the library was unpainted, did not have a single lighting fixture, and only had very few old books. A portion of the room was also utilized as a clinic.

The VECO employees cleaned the room thoroughly, painted its walls, replaced its old electrical wirings, and installed CFL bulbs.

A kit that includes a new book shelf filled with 52 sets of flash cards, 93 books (including seven sets of science encyclopedias), Filipino dictionary, dictionaries, thesaurus, National Geographic Kid’s Almanac 2011, communication books for grades one to six and a globe was also donated to the library.

Greenhills Elementary is the second school in San Fernando that received Veco’s library kit. The first recipient was Leonard Wood Elementary School in Barangay Jagobiao, Mandaue City followed by Barangay Balud Elementary School, also in San Fernando.

Only public schools within VECO’s franchise area may avail of the kit. For more information about the project, interested schools may channel inquiries through 230-8326 (local 6311). (FREEMAN)
