CITOM urged to strictly enforce traffic laws

CEBU, Philippines - Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama has issued a memorandum order directing all traffic enforcers of the city to strictly enforce and to comply with the traffic-related laws while driving their own vehicles to avoid sanction.

The memorandum was issued following several complaints against CITOM enforcers who have been negligent and violators of the very laws that they are tasked to implement.

“Any personnel of the City Traffic Operations Management (CITOM) who will be caught flagrantly violating our own traffic rules shall be dealt with accordingly,” reads the memorandum order.

The memorandum was addressed to CITOM chairman Sylvan “Jack” Jakosalem for proper dissemination.

Rama said CITOM enforcers who violate the same law that they are tasked to implement will lost the public’s respect which might affect the others who are doing their jobs well.

“To forestall public criticism against violations committed by our traffic personnel, all traffic enforcers and other CITOM personnel are enjoined to strictly abide to all traffic-related City Ordinances and the provisions of the National Traffic Code being models in the implementation of our laws,” Rama said.

Traffic enforcer Rodolfo Acantilado has been invited to attend during the CITOM Board meeting this morning so he could explain why he failed to apprehend passenger jeepney drivers who failed to switch on their headlights while traveling along Gorordo Avenue.

City Councilor Richard “Ritchie” Osmeña, chairman of the City Council’s committee on traffic management, said another Citom enforcer was also asked to be present during the meeting because of another complaint from a motorist.

Osmeña said it was decided by the CITOM Board that any traffic enforcers will be asked to appear before them if somebody will complain against their attitude in manning the traffic. – (FREEMAN)
