CEBU, Philippines - Mayor Michael Rama yesterday said the Cebu City government is ready to extend assistance if there are Cebuanos, especially Cebu City residents, working in Eygpt that need to be evacuated as the situation there worsens.
Rama said his office is still coordinating with the Department of Manpower and Placement Development, the Department of Labor and Employment, and the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration to determine if there are Cebuanos there.
Documented Filipinos all over Egypt working either as nurses, physical therapists and domestic workers number around 463. There are 6,000 Filipinos are living in Egypt mainly in the cities of Cairo and Alexandria.
But OWWA is only relying on reports on the state of Filipino migrant workers there from the Philippine Embassy in Cairo as they have not established an office there.
As of now, telecommunication, Internet and flights to Egypt are still down, reports from the Philippine Embassy said.
The Department of Foreign Affairs also issued a travel advisory for tourists planning to visit the world-famous pyramids and other attractions of the North African country to defer non-essential and non-urgent travel until security situation stabilizes. (FREEMAN)
