CEBU, Philippines - The University of the Visayas Maritime College is the first educational institution in the Philippines to receive the Det Norske Veritas (DNV) SeaSkill Certification.
Det Norske Veritas issued certificates of compliance to UV President, Cong. Eduardo R. Gullas and Executive Vice President, Dr. Jose R. Gullas, for both BS Marine Transportation and Marine Engineering effective January 21, 2011 signed in Hovik, Norway.
The two courses offered by UV have been reviewed by DNV committee experts in Singapore in close coordination with UV’s Quality Management Representative, Dr. Benilda Q. Gadin. The verification was based on the DNV Standard for Certification of Learning Programmes 3.201, International Maritime Organization (IMO) Model Courses 7.03 and 7.04 and CHED Memorandum Order (CMO) No. 13 S. 2005.
The certification makes UV Maritime College the first Maritime School in Cebu and in the Philippines to receive a classification-endorsed competence management system.
DNV SeaSkill provides Certification of Learning Programmes to training providers as the basis for developing training courses and programmes. The certification ensures that the courses or programmes offered are properly designed, contain clear objectives for results, are carried out by qualified trainers and are in line with industry demands and experience. It also ensures that the required equipment and facilities for the training courses meet the requirement stipulated in an agreed industry standard.
The certification process goes beyond validating the course curriculum and schedules. It also verifies the qualification and competence of trainers and the examination process. The DNV certification process gives a comprehensive 360-degree advantage, making sure that students who enroll in these intensive courses get their money’s worth and more importantly, gives them a career edge in their field of specialization. — PR/JPM (FREEMAN)
