"Balikbayans" start to arrive for Sinulog

CEBU, Philippines - The first batch of "balikbayans," numbering thirty-two, who earlier had said they were coming for the Sinulog Festival, arrived at the Mactan Cebu International Airport yesterday morning and were met by the Cebu City Tourism Commission and airport employees.

A check made by The FREEMAN at the Public Affairs Division of the Mactan Airport showed that the 32 "balikbayans" are from Las Vegas, all members of the Philippine Bisayan Society of Las Vegas.

Cinbeth Orellano of the Cebu City Tourism Commission said the second batch is expected to arrive on January 10.

And on January 13, more than 200 balikbayans are also expected to arrive.

A welcome party to be composed of rondalla players and Sinulog dancers is being prepared by the Cebu City government and the Department of Tourism.

The Cebu City government and the private sector and different tourism-oriented business establishments in Cebu are sponsors of the "Balik Cebu Program."

Under the program, returning Balik Cebu balikbayans will be given a VIP welcome that includes a barrio fiesta dinner on January 13, music, dancing, and the presence of the newly-crowned Miss Cebu and her court. (FREEMAN)
