CEBU, Philippines - A Grade 6 student of the Barangay Luz Elementary School placed first in the first “On the spot poster and slogan making contest” held last December 11, 2010 at the Elizabeth Mall organized by the Sinulog Foundation Inc.
Gusty Paul Rosario, 12, said he started drawing when he was Grade 3. Nature is his favorite subject because of its colors.
Gusty said he was not expecting to win as many other students joined the contest. He said he just did what he loves to do and enjoyed the contest.
Gusty said that almost all the members of his family can draw. He is the fifth in a brood of six, his mother Aida takes care of them at home while his father Edward works in Saudi.
Of 13 drawing contests Gusty joined last year he placed first in six of them. He was discovered by the school after placing first in a poster-making contest in the school.
Principal Jeanne Egger described Gusty as a cheerful boy who has brought so many honors to their school. She said she is happy and proud because even if there was little time for him and his trainers to prepare for the contest, Gusty still made it.
Grade 3 teacher Georgelyn Cardosa and her sister Grade 2 teacher Richel Jadol are Gusty’s trainers. They said they were not expecting Gusty to win because of the short time they had to prepare.
It was only Saturday morning that they collaborated on what he should draw in the contest that afternoon.
Cardosa said that Gusty has been winning different contest and categories, but in this last contest she said they gave the child the freedom to do as he saw fit.
Jadol said that they were all happy with the results.
“Dakong achievement sa among part nga maski dili mi ing-aning kadako nga school pero na recognized siya,” she said.
Gusty won P10,000 for taking home first prize, his poster will be made the front cover of the Sinulog program for 2010. (FREEMAN)
