CEBU, Philippines – A retired boxer who is currently a member of the Barangay Intelligence Network will face criminal charges for allegedly beating a taxi driver in Barangay Basak-Pardo last Monday night.
The family of Alexander Melendrez will press charges against 41-year-old Andy Tabanas for punching him in the face and other parts of his body.
The case stemmed from last Monday night's incident wherein Melendrez and his live-in-partner, Juvy Cabulao, argued over some personal matters.
Irked, Melendrez reportedly struck Cabulao's head with a plate. This resulted in a commotion that eventually needed the intervention of barangay tanods.
Beverly Ercido and Maribel Melendrez, sisters of the Alexander, said they saw their brother was already calm when taken by the barangay tanods towards Pardo Police Station.
But to their surprise when they arrived at the police station a few minutes later, Alexander was already suffering from pain in his stomach, nape and other parts of the body after he was allegedly beaten black and blue.
Alexander claimed that Tabanas, who also resides in Barangay Basak-Pardo, and some of the barangay tanods, who mauled him.
The sisters rushed him to the hospital for a medical check up and threatened to file a case against Tabanas and the tanods.
PO3 Robert Bobby Escarlan of Pardo Police Station believes that the victim resisted on the way to the police station.
Alexander, Escarlan said, was already injured when he and the tanods reached the police station.
Escarlan pointed it out that if the mauling incident transpired at the police station, they would have prevented Tabanas or the other tanods from attacking the victim.
The police said that once a warrant of arrest is issued against Tabanas, they will arrest him. (FREEMAN)
