CEBU, Philippines – The heavy rains uprooted several trees and caused traffic in Sitio Grahe, Barangay Busay, Cebu City yesterday afternoon.
Fortunately, no one was hurt.
Julian Cañete, a resident, said that while they were traveling along the highway in Busay, they were stopped by trees and soil blocking the road. Rocks were also tumbling down the hill, he said.
Alvin Santillana, executive director of the Cebu City Crisis Management Office, said that what happened was erosion but he assured that most of the residents in Busay live on a safe area.
The safety of the residents, he added, is a responsibility primarily of the barangay being the most basic local government unit, and since it is the barangay officials who can respond immediately to emergencies.
The Mines and Geo-sciences Bureau (MGB) 7 had identified Busay as among 18 barangays in Cebu City that are considered hazardous areas because of geological threats like landslides and others. (FREEMAN)
