University of the Visayas reaches final round in finance competition

CEBU, Philippines – The University of the Visayas is among five schools from Cebu that will compete in the final round of the 12th FINEX-CITI Inter-Collegiate Finance Competition.

Rosemarie Español, dean of the UV College of Business Administration, said the university finished top 5 in the regional competition held last September 17 at the University of San Carlos and consequently got into the national top 20 after breaking the tie with the University of Makati.

UV is represented by 4th year B.S. Accountancy students Roy Anthony Genilla, Mabelle Arellano and Joanne Buling-buling. The coaches, aside from Español, are Bengie Bayer, Sarah Benitez and Beethhoven Encabo.

The FINEX ICFC was first held in 1999 to raise the quality of finance education in the country and expose participating schools to world-class finance education standards.

A total of 72 schools all over the country participated in the 12th FINEX ICFC elimination rounds, which was done simultaneously in 5 locations - the Asian Institute of Management for NCR Central and Central and Southern Luzon; University of Baguio for Northern Luzon; Xavier University for Mindanao; University of St. La Salle for Western Visayas; and University of San Carlos for Eastern and Central Visayas.

Español said that UV joined the competition in 2006 and qualified for the final round in 2007. This is the second time for UV to qualify for the final round.

Aside from the top 20 schools, seeded schools from the Asian region - schools from HongKong, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand - will also participate in the final round, which will be held on October 18, 2010 at the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas main office in Manila.

Dean Español said the support given by the University, headed by President Eduardo R. Gullas and Executive Vice President Jose "Dodong" R. Gullas, as well as the trainings provided by the coaches are the reasons why the students are motivated to do their best in the competition.

Two of the university's representatives to the competition, Genilla and Arellano, were also members of the team that won the championship in the Level 2 Accountancy Quiz Bowl held last July 21. (FREEMAN)
