Today: Lapu-Lapu marks 49th charter day anniversary

CEBU, Philippines - It’s a special non-working holiday in Lapu-Lapu City today as the city marks its 49th Charter Day anniversary.

However, Secretary to the Office of the Mayor Rolando Duero said no big celebration will be held this year.

"Aduna unta'y giandam nga mga nakalinyang kalihukan nunot sa maong kasaulogan apan gumikan sa mga kakulian dili kini mahinayon karong adlawa," Duero said, adding that one of the activities was the giving of loyalty awards to some 200 government employees.

Outgoing Lapu-Lapu City Mayor and now Congressman-elect Arturo Radaza and Mayor-elect Paz Radaza were in Manila since yesterday for an important engagement.

Nevertheless, Duero said the 200 employees will still be given due recognition.

Under Civil Service Commission (CSC) Executive Order 292, candidates for the loyalty award should have "completed at least 10 years of continuous and satisfactory service in the government."

"Bisan pa nga dili mahinayon karong adlawa ang pagpanghatag sa maong pasidungog pero ato gihapong ihatag ngadto sa mga empleyado sa umaabot nga mga adlaw," Duero said.

Presidential Proclamation No. 2076 states that Lapu-Lapu City was created June 17, 1961 by virtue of Republic Act 3134.

Located on the northern part of Mactan Island, Lapu-Lapu City is bounded by the Magellan Bay on the north, the Mactan Channel on the west, the Hilutungan Channel on the East, and the Municipality of Cordova on the South. The city has a land area of 6,422.60 hectares.

It lies about 5 km (about 3 miles) across Cebu Harbor from Cebu City and is part of the Cebu metropolitan area.

The short Mandaue-Mactan Bridge connects Lapu-Lapu and the rest of Mactan Island with Mandaue on Cebu Island.

The city is a port and industrial center noted for its thermal installations, which burn petroleum for energy; corn and flour milling; fishing; and handmade guitars.   (FREEMAN NEWS)
