CEBU, Philippines - Around 200 people including students and members of religious sector unfurled the country’s biggest flag in the vacant two-hectare lot in barangay Jubay, Liloan yesterday morning.
Businesswoman and visionary leader Grace Gupana said the Philippine flag measures 200 meters by 100 meters and weighs 3 tons.
The same flag was first unveiled in 2006 at a hillside in Aritao, Nueva Vizcaya but made its first public appearance in Israel on November 25, 2007.
It measured 18, 818 square meters and is the second largest flag in the world, next to the Israeli flag, which measures 18, 847 square meters.
Gupana, who is the chief executive officer of the ABS GEN Herbs International, said the flag was brought here in order to show the “flag in its grandeur.”
It was purely-Filipino made, Gupana said, adding that she has spent millions of pesos in her effort to tour the Philippine flag around 22 countries and several provinces and cities in the country.
Gupana said she aims to instill patriotism among Filipinos.
At present, Gupana has already created four flags -- Israel, Philippines, South Korea at 8,305 square meters, and North Korea at 8,304 square meters.
The four huge flags compose the 777 Yahveh's Banner, which covers a total area of 54,451 square meters. The four huge flags also contain 180 other flags stitched at their edges.
The banner is also aptly called the Flag of All Nations, which Gupana said is a trumpet call for all believers worldwide to unite and worship the God of Israel, of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and to pray for peace in Jerusalem.
The huge Philippine flag, Gupana added, is also a form of declaration to the world that the Philippines is rising against all odds.
Gupana has achieved nine Guinness World Records Awards including the largest flag, which is the Israel flag and the world’s largest banner, which is the 777 Yahbeh’s Banner. – Garry B. Lao (THE FREEMAN)
