Money woes drive Korean to kill self

CEBU, Philippines - A 29-year-old Korean national was found hanging dead early morning yesterday in front of Sta. Rita Chapel in Doña Rita Village, Barangay Banilad, Cebu City.

The police believe that Kim Youngkeun killed himself due to financial problems and disappointment over his brother who is in Korea.

Youngkeun’s former girlfriend, Jennifer Abella, told police that the victim had expressed disappointment over his brother after the latter refused to give him money.

The victim allegedly asked money from his brother in the last week of December after he ran out of cash for expenses but the latter allegedly did not give in to his demands.

At past 5 a.m. yesterday, Jacky Villaflor, 38, caretaker of the chapel, discovered the body of the victim hanging at the entrance of the chapel. She immediately asked assistance from Chester Fiel, security guard of the village, who then called the police.

Responding personnel from the Homicide Section of the Cebu City Police Office found out that the victim linked together four pieces of neckties, which he used in tying around his neck with its other end tied to the railing of the entrance door of the chapel.

The chapel is located some 300 meters away from the victim’s rented house. — Niña G. Sumacot/WAB   (FREEMAN NEWS)
