Region lacks blood supply

CEBU, Philippines - The Regional Blood Center-7 confirmed that it has a limited supply of blood. Dr. Rinette Cristine Ligaray of RBC-7 added that a lot of patients here need blood but only a few are qualified or able to donate their blood.

“Every time there is a need of blood, pangitaon pa gayud una kini,” Ligaray said.

“Ang ato unta gusto mahitabo nga at the time nga duna may mangkinahanglan, dapat ang dugo available na siya ug ready for use”, Ligaray said.

Aside from the limited number of blood, another problem that emerges is blood safety.

“On top nga nagkuwang ang ato’ng dugo, mo-concern pa kita og mo-siguro nga ang dugo nga ma-available maayo ang quality ug dili magdala og sakit,” Ligaray said. Donated blood has to be screened for HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C.

Meanwhile Dr. Randal Joey Angub of the Blood Recruitment Officer of RBC-7 estimated that more than a hundred blood bags are needed everyday here in Central Visayas.

Both officials also urged a need for cooperation between their offices, the Department of Health as well as with the other sectors of the community to solve the insufficient supply of blood in the region.

“Ang community mao’y nagkinahanglan og dugo, ang community ra usab ang maka-provide og dugo,” Ligaray said. — Johanna T. Natavio/BRP   (FREEMAN NEWS)
