Jealousy triggers gruesome murders: Bloody Saturday

CEBU, Philippines - Three incidents of domestic violence yesterday left at least six people dead, including two children, in what can be described one of the bloodiest Saturdays in Cebu in recent years.

A couple stabbed each other dead in La Guardia, Lahug, Cebu City at dawn yesterday while a man stabbed and slashed the throat of his wife in a fit of rage in barangay Mambaling yesterday afternoon. Police theorized jealousy as motives for both incidents.

In Lapu-Lapu City, suspecting that his wife has another lover, jealousy also drove a man to commit suicide after killing his two children.

Lahug incident

In the first incident, live-in partners Von Eric Mape Moyo, 28, and Ana Marie Marquez Nuez, 28, stabbed each other dead during a heated argument inside their rented house along Saint Lawrence Street, La Guardia past 2 p.m.

Nuez, a call center agent in the city, and Von Eric Mape Moyo, jobless, both hailed from Albay in Bicol.

According to Jude Fuertes, a board mate of the couple who is also a call center agent, he was sleeping after having a drink with Moyo when he heard a punch on the wall with Nuez saying “Bâ, masakit.”

Thinking that the two were just making love, he ignored the commotion.

But when Nuez cried “Jude, tulong!” a moment later, he immediately woke up and saw Moyo stab Nuez, already bloodied, on her arm at the kitchen.

Fuertes immediately took the couple’s one year-old-daughter from the room, who was already crying, but Moyo allegedly aimed the knife at him, prompting him run to towards the door.

He then saw Moyo continued stabbing Nuez then himself several times.

Another board mate, an officemate of the Nuez, noticed the commotion which prompted her to wake up her two siblings and ran outside the house. She and Fuertes then called for assistance from barangay tanods and police.

Fuertes said Moyo and Nuez were still conscious when he ran from the house, believing that they can still be revived if taken immediately to the hospital.

“Nahadlok man sad ang mga tanod mosulod mao ‘tong gihulat ang mga pulis. Miabot sila (police) mga 30 to 45 minutes later na. ‘Nya wala pa g’yud misulod dayon kay wala man sila’y dala nga armas, mao ‘tong naghulat na sad mi sa ubang pulis. Nasulod ang kwarto, mga one hour kapin later na, ‘nya patay na sad sila (victims),” Fuertes alleged.

The bloodied bodies of the couple were found lying on their sides with multiple stab wounds. Responding personnel of Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation declared them dead already.

Police recovered three kitchen knives from the crime scene, measuring 12.5 inches, 10.5 inches, and 8 inches, and a butcher’s knife measuring 11.5 inches. The 10.5 inch long knife and the 8-inch knife were still embedded on Moyo’s abdomen and back when the police arrived.

Police believed Nuez used the 8-inch knife to stab Moyo in the back.

They also recovered two cellular phones, Nuez’s wallet, several cards and pictures from the crime scene.

The two bodies were taken to the San Fernando Funeral Homes. Personnel of the funeral parlor said Nuez bore 37 stab wounds while Moyo has 16.

PO2 Leroy Baguio of the Cebu City Police Office Homicide Section said they are looking into love triangle as possible motive for the incident.

Baguio said sometime last week, the couple were seen having an argument after Moyo confronted Nuez over the text message he saw from her cellular phone reportedly from a male sender.

Fuertes said the couple seemed to have a minor argument because they were calmly talking at one another.

Last Friday, Nuez reportedly asked permission from Moyo to leave to meet an officemate. Nuez then allegedly went home around 2 a.m. after Moyo sent her a text message saying: “Bâ, 2 a.m. na. Uwi na po.”

It was then that the bloody incident followed.

It was learned that Nuez, who is supposed to celebrate her birthday on August 29, is legally married and her husband is currently based in Bicol. They have two children.

Mambaling incident

In barangay Mambaling, a man stabbed and slashed the neck of his live-in partner after he reportedly learned that she has been meeting someone past 3 p.m. in sitio Mangga Dos.

The victim, Racquel Abellanida, 32, was killed on the spot by his husband, Alfredo “Junior” Ortega, 39, a former furniture worker in Mandaue City.

According to the couple’s 12-year-old son, his mother had just arrived from Manila yesterday afternoon.

The boy said his father got angry when his mother suddenly disappeared and went out with a neighbor named Madonna.

When Abellanida arrived, Ortega allegedly confronted her, saying: “Naa ka’y uyab ‘no,” an allegation that Abellanida vehemently denied.

An altercation then ensued, prompting Ortega to collar Abellanida and stabbed her in the throat. Upon seeing his father attacking his mother, the boy immediately ran away from their house.

The suspect immediately fled after the incident.

The boy claimed that his father would always cry because his mother would always leave them.

PO3 Celso Sarona of Mambaling Police Station said that jealousy was seen as the motive for the incident.

He said the victim has been leaving the suspect several times without even asking permission, which caused Ortega to suspect that she has another lover.

Lapu-Lapu City incident

An hour later, a man killed his two children by slashing their necks and then committed suicide in sitio Sewages, barangay Pusok, Lapu-Lapu City.

Roderick Rignos, 29, a vulcanizing shop owner, hanged himself shortly after killing his 5-year-old son Cedric and 4-year-old daughter Sydney.

Reymond Rignos, elder brother of Roderick, told reporters that the suspect and his live-in partner, Charito Frias, have been arguing because Roderick has been suspecting that Frias has another lover.

Frias reportedly has not gone home for a week after the couple fought over her practice of going home late from her job at the Mactan Export Processing Zone (MEPZ) 1.

Roderick allegedly started to become suspicious after he caught his wife talking with another man last week.

Frias would reportedly tell him that she had been doing some overtime works but when he called up her office once, he found out that she did not have any overtime work.

Reymond said he saw his brother and his children together yesterday morning but was surprised when the door of their house was closed in the afternoon.

He then peered through the window and was shocked to see Roderick hanging from the ceiling with a cable wire tied around his neck.

He immediately called for police assistance and when they opened the house, they discovered the kids lying on the bed already dead with slash wounds on their necks.

The police theorized that the suspect waited the children to sleep before slashing their necks while covering their mouths with a pillow.
