CEBU, Philippines - A man who tried to evade trouble ended up being shot allegedly by a barangay tanod yesterday dawn at F. Jaca Street, barangay Inayawan, Cebu City.
The victim was Gary Montero while the perpetrator is still unidentified.
The victim told the police that he was about to buy bread around 2 a.m. together with his friend, a certain Jason, when he noticed of a commotion and heard of gunfire nearby which prompted him to run away.
In the process, he was met by one of the tanods of the barangay who allegedly pointed a gun at him while instructing him to stop. But when he ignored and continued to run, he saw the said tanod pointing his gun downward and began shooting, hitting his right leg.
The victim was taken by his younger brother, Juramil, to the Cebu City Medical Center and was later discharged after treatment. Police who conducted on-the-spot investigation informed chief tanod Ricardo Daclan for a lineup of all his barangay tanods.
However, in an interview with Daclan, he denied that one of his tanods was involved in the incident.
Meanwhile, a construction worker was mauled and stabbed by two men who got irked at him over a cards game shortly after midnight yesterday in barangay Camputhaw.
The victim was Danny Boy Pecore, 28, while the suspects were identified as Alberto Mabalhin, 35, steelman and his nephew Junmar Mabalhin, 19, canteen helper. Both are from Tubod, Surigao Del Norte.
The victim alleged that the elder Mabalhin and his other co-worker, Ronald Higala got angry at him while they were playing “tong-its” in the ongoing constructed building which prompted him to stop.
While he was in his bunkhouse located below the said building, he was allegedly stoned by the elder Mabalhin and when he went out, he was suddenly attacked this time by the two. Alberto reportedly struck him with a stone while Junmar stabbed him in the back.
The victim was taken to the CCMC after sustaining stab wounds on his back and injuries on his head, neck and chest. — Niña G. Sumacot (THE FREEMAN)
