Two dead after Rough Riders bus hits motorcycle

CEBU, Philippines – Two men on a motorcycle were killed after they were run over and dragged by a Rough Riders bus along the highway in barangay Cayang, Bogo, past 8 p.m. last Sunday.

The fatalities were identified as Remegio Ylanan, 35, a resident of barangay Anapog, San Remigio town, the driver of the Ramstar motorcycle with plate numbers YI-240; and his passenger Domingo Maitom, 54, of barangay Cayang, Bogo.

The driver of Rough Riders Bus with plate numbers GVY-274 was identified as Rio Kent Alfuerto, 24, of barangay Ylaya, Dumanjug town.

Investigation revealed that the motorcycle and the bus were both traveling towards barangay Cayang from Bogo proper.

Upon reaching the said place, Ylanan reduced the speed of his motorcycle supposedly managing a left turn but it was also at the same time when Alfuerto tried to overtake the motorcycle.

When Alfuerto failed to apply the brakes, the motorcycle and its passengers were hit and dragged underneath the bus for several meters.

Nearby residents rushed Ylanan to the Severo Verallo District Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival while it took one hour for residents to extract Maitom, who was already dead, from under the bus.

The bus driver voluntarily surrendered to the responding policemen and is expected to face the appropriate charges against him. — Niña G. Sumacot/BRP (THE FREEMAN)
