Policeman sued for grave threats

CEBU, Philippines - A policeman formerly assigned to Minglanilla town who is now in Tuburan town is facing a complaint for grave threats before the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office for allegedly threatening to hurt a mother and her daughter inside the Minglanilla police station where he used to be assigned.

Complainant Priscilla Caballero, a resident of Poblacion Ward 1, Minglanilla, filed the complaint against PO3 Glenn Burlas saying that early evening last January 29, 2009 she and her daughter went to the Minglanilla police station to report a fight between her and a certain Marilyn Avila, which reportedly resulted to her daughter sustaining some injuries.

However, while they waited for the issuance form needed in filing a medical certificate, Burlas, who was then in plainclothes, arrived and snarled at them, saying: “Kamo makig-kontra mo nako? Sisiw ramo! Duha ra mo ka bala!”

Caballero said she later learned that Burlas and Avila are acquaintances.

Caballero said she and her daughter went back to the police station the next day to formally file the complaint against Avila but Burlas allegedly again confronted them, saying: “O, asa naman inyong gisaligan? Pagawasa!”

When her daughter answered back that no one was protecting them, Burlas allegedly threatened to push her off the window if she would continue answering back.

“Ayaw pagtubag-tubag kay basin ihug tika sa bintana!” the policeman allegedly said, at the same time getting hold of a mineral water bottle and threw it to the girl.

The incident even reportedly caught the attention of Minglanilla police chief Romeo Santander who gave a warning to Burlas. — Angelica Odias and Iris Christine Cornito, UP Masscom interns/JMO   (THE FREEMAN)
