36th Sinulog Festival in Carmen set today

Cebu - The municipality of Carmen will celebrate its 36th Sinulog Festival today with nine out-of-town contingents joining the dance competition.

The Carmen contingent that placed third here in the city will dance the Sinulog today as “halad” or offering both to God and to the people of Carmen.

Municipal officials will also dance the Sinulog with barangays officials.

Carmen municipal Mayor Sonia Pua will lead town officials, employees, and residents in today’s celebration which will also honor the former organizers of the Sinulog that include former Carmen parish priest, Rev. Fr. Jose Motus and the late town mayor Virginio Villamor.

According to Mayor Pua, they would also “consider in perspective the year 1974 when Carmen established the record of staging the first Sinulog in the entire Cebu province.” Fr. Motus, from Kalibo, Aklan of the famous Ati-Atihan Festival, is the brains of the Sinulog in Carmen. Governor Gwendolyn Garcia is expected to witness the festival today. — Jose P.
