Fisher dies, wife severely hurt in dynamite explosion

CEBU - Dynamite explosion killed a fisherman and severely injured his wife yesterday morning in sitio Mahayahay, barangay Daang Lungsod, Medellin.

Police said Leodegario Godines, 45, was declared dead on arrival at Severio Verallo Hospital in Bogo City while his wife, Darlita, 44, is still being confined at the hospital for the severe wounds in her face.

Investigation showed that at around 6 a.m. yesterday, the couple was fishing off the shore of sitio Mahayahay when they spotted a school of fish.

Lured by the possible ample catch, Leodegario allegedly lighted a dynamite, but then it unfortunately exploded even before he throws it to the sea.

Eduardo Espacio, younger brother of Darlita, who was also fishing about 500 meters away from the couple, rushed towards Godineses’ location after hearing of the loud explosion.

Espacio, together with another fisherman Crispolo Canangan, immediately took the couple to the hospital for treatment.

SPO1 Roland Reyes of Medellin Police Station said that Leodegario’s right hand was severed while his chest and face were severely injured that caused his instantaneous death.

Reyes confirmed that the couple used dynamite in fishing. — Niña Chrismae G. Sumacot/WAB   (THE FREEMAN)
