CEBU - A man detained at the stockade of Minglanilla Police Station tried to commit suicide by hanging himself using a towel at around 9:15 p.m. last Tuesday.
If not for the timely discovery of roving police officers, Gerald Basilan Labrador, 33, married, resident of Poblacion Ward 3, could have been dead by now.
PO2 Edsel Ricablanca of Minglanilla police said that Labrador, who was arrested for violation of the Republic Act 7610, or the Child Abuse Law, and grave threats, was seen lonely in the past few days after he was detained at the police station.
There were only two detainees at that time inside the police detention cell.
When his co-detainee fell asleep, Labrador allegedly got his towel and tied it around his neck with the other end tied to the steel bar at the main door of the cell.
Luckily, police officers who were on duty at that time saw Labrador and immediately rescued him.
Labrador was rushed to Minglanilla District hospital but he was discharged shortly as he only sustained minor injuries in the neck.
“Ok naman ni siya karon nagkatawa-katawa naman gani. Naa pa ni siya karon diri sa prisuhan pero giplanuhan pa ni siya nga ibalhin sa BJMP (Bureau of Jail Management and Penology),” PO2 Ricablanca said. — Christopher Gabriel Bonjoc/WAB (THE FREEMAN)
