47 children "rescued" from carolling on streets

CEBU - The Cebu City’s Anti-mendicancy Task Force has so far rescued 47 children from carolling on the streets since rescue operations started last month.

Task force head Isabelita Ganob said the rescued children have been released to their families but their parents have been warned that they can face possible charges if they continue to let their kids carol in the streets.

The parents reportedly can be held liable for violating the Child and Youth Welfare Code because they are placing their children in danger by allowing them to carol inside public utility vehicles or by windows of private cars.

Ganob said the city intends to intensify the campaign to the grassroots level by creating task force groups in the barangays.

The city’s anti-mendicancy task force is composed of the police, personnel of the Department of Social Welfare and Services, several City Hall personnel, and barangay tanods. — Rene U. Borromeo/JMO   (THE FREEMAN)
