Militant farmers, fishers hold protest

CEBU - In line with the “Day of Global Action” participated by peasant and support groups from the different countries of Asia, farmers and fisherfolks from different rural areas in the province of Cebu converged in Cebu City for a protest yesterday.

Militants from the said sectors arrived and gathered in Plaza Independencia around 8 a.m. yesterday and later proceeded to the Police Regional Office-7 to protest their presence in agrarian reform areas.

Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas-Cebu head Glemmar Bacusmo said that the activity was pointing particularly to the militarization in Aloguinsan and Pinamungajan.

The militants then marched to the Department of Energy-7 where they handed regional director Antonio Labios a paper entitled “Pagpamukot sa DOE” in protest against the destruction of the sea life and sources of livelihood through oil exploration.

From there they went to the Department of Agrarian Reform where they confronted its officials over alleged anomalous agrarian transactions.

“Regarding ni sa among demands na unta matubag na nila. Ingon si Agrarian director Rodulfo Inson nga naa sila ron sa due process of the implementation of the programs particularly the CARP (Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program) of former president Cory Aquino and the PD 27 or Land Reform Program by Ferdinand Marcos,” Bacusmo further said. – Niña Chrismae G.
