The retired teacher who shot his wife dead in Santander town last weekend reportedly tried to end his life by grabbing the steering wheel of the ambulance he was transported in, which almost drove the vehicle off a cliff in Oslob town Monday evening.
The incident happened when the ambulance was in transit to Santander from the Palace of Justice here in Cebu City where a formal case of parricide was filed against Alberto Abiso, 64.
Abiso allegedly shot is wife Doris, 42, last Sunday after he reportedly caught her with a 21-year-old paramour twice.
PO1 Anthony Aba of the Santander police said Abiso grabbed the steering wheel from driver Elviro Miral, which caused the ambulance to crash into the road railing in barangay Calumpang, Oslob around 10 in the evening Monday. The ambulance’s windshield, bumper and its right side were badly damaged.
Also in the ambulance were the complainants of the case and another detainee in another case.
Police surmised the move could be a suicide attempt, considering that Abiso also asked someone to buy him a blade earlier that day.
“Mura ba og nanabla na lang siya, wa na siguroy paglaum,” Aba said, adding that the incident would mean another case on top of the parricide case Abiso is facing.
Cebu Provincial Police Office director Carmelo Valmoria yesterday directed Santander police chief Richard Oliver to probe the incident and reminded all police personnel to observe safety nets in transporting criminal suspects.
Valmoria said suspects should not be made to occupy the front seat of the vehicle transporting them.
“I am reminding all COP’s not to allow suspects to seat in the front seat,” Valmoria said. — Ferliza C. Contratista/JMO
