A barangay tanod was stabbed dead by his neighbor in barangay Nangka, Boljoon town yesterday afternoon.
Pedro Alsola, 31, a farmer and a barangay tanod of Nangka was reportedly watching his children at play when his neighbor Rufo Legarte, 60, stabbed him with a 14 inch-long knife in the left side of his chest.
But PO1 Roderick Balili of the Boljoon police station told The FREEMAN that tanod chief Wenceslao Rondina Sera went to the station and said that he heard a gunshot prior to the incident.
This prompted him to go and check the place where the sound came from.
When he reached the place, he saw Legarte holding the bloodstained knife.
Sera asked the suspect what happened and the latter told him that he killed the victim out of self-defense after the barangay tanod tried to shoot him.
Sera brought Legarte to the police station while police went directly to the house of Alsola’s grandfather where they found the victim had already died of his wounds.
The victim’s wife said her husband never shot the suspect and was just watching their sons playing near the barangay hall when the suspect passed by and stabbed him.
“Nagtan-aw ra kuno siya sa iyang mga anak nga nagdula unya gilipot lang sa suspect ug gidunggab,” Balili said, quoting the account of the victim’s wife.
A case of murder is set to be filed against the suspect who is presently detained at the Boljoon Municipal Jail. — Joy Kareen T. Saliente/BRP
