The Department of Education plans is planning to implement what it called the “double-single” policy in order to solve the problem on the lack of classrooms nationwide.
Department of Education regional director Carolino Mordeno said in an interview that in Central Visayas alone, about 1,000 classrooms for high school and 600 classrooms for elementary are needed in order to accommodate the increasing number of enrollees in June.
“Ang atong problema karon sa classroom, mostly sa high school, although naa sad gamay’ng problema sa elementary. This is because well-established na man gud ang atong mga elementary schools sa different barangays,” Mordeno said.
Mordeno said DepEd might implement the “double-single” policy, which means the holding of day and night classes to accommodate the students.
“That is, kung magkulang pa gyud ang atong classrooms - meaning, we have schedules for morning classes and naa sad ta other schedule for night classes so we can accommodate the students,” Mordeno said.
He, however, assured that DepEd is doing its best to solve the problem on the shortage of classroom before classes will open next month. “The government has responded to our needs.”
As of now, the classroom-construction program is already ongoing in the provinces of Cebu and Bohol.
Certain non-government organizations such as the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation and Plan International are also helping the program by supplying the materials needed for the construction. — Joy Kareen T. Saliente/LPM
