DENR initiates Butuanon River clean-up

In its aim to revive the Butuanon River which has been considered dead for many years, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources yesterday initiated a clean up along the river bank The clean up was participated in by at least 65 personnel from the DENR regional office, local government officials, and residents near the river and employees of companies in barangay Canduman in Mandaue City.

The initiative is one of DENR''s activities for the Earth Month celebration.

DENR Regional Executive Director Alan Arranguez said that they have coordinated with several local government units for the clean up and with companies in barangay Canduman situated near the riverbank.

Arranguez said that after the clean up they will also be initiating other clean up campaigns in barangay Paknaan ang Tangub also in Mandaue City as part of the whole month celebration.

He said that Butuanon River, one of the cleanest rivers in the 1970s, has been considered biologically dead for many years now because of the indiscriminate throwing of garbage.

The DENR will also spearhead the planting of mangroves in Cordova on April 22. Arranguez said that among the participants of the mangrove planting will be the local officials of Cordova. - Jasmin R. Uy/QSB
