Gullas unfazed by his four opponents

Reelectionist Cebu first district Rep. Eduardo Gullas is unfazed by the candidacies of his four political opponents in the May 14 elections, saying that it is up to his constituents to choose who among them will best represent the first district in Congress.

Gullas is seeking for his second term under Kabalikat ng Malayang Pilipino (Kampi), but he already served the district three terms before becoming mayor of Talisay City in 2001.

He is now being challenged by former vice governor Enrique Rama of the United Opposition, veteran broadcaster Alex Bolongaita of Abag-Promdi, and independent candidates Ricardo Adlawan and Felipe Concepcion.

The brother of Rama, Napoleon Jr., and Bolongaita already lost to Gullas in the 2004 elections.

Gullas said the projects he implemented in Talisay City and the towns of Minglanilla, Naga, San Fernando, Carcar and Sibonga are his legacy to the people in the first district.

But he said it is up to the people to choose who among them deserves to serve and provide their needs.

Gullas, who served as provincial governor for 10 years from 1976 to 1986, first ran for congressman in 1992.

After completing three congressional terms in 2001, Gullas was succeeded by his younger brother, Jose, who served the first district for only one term. He then gained back the congressional post in 2004. — Gregg M. Rubio/LPM
