One dead, three hurt in bike crash

One man was killed while three others were injured after a tricycle crashed while negotiating a curve along the national highway of barangay Guiwanon, Ginatilan town, last Saturday afternoon.

SPO1 Arnold Omaña of the Ginatilan police yesterday said that before the accident the tricycle driven by Panfilo Lepana was hired by Zavino Legarte, 56, a fisherman from barangay Legaspi, Alegria town, to transport some bamboo.

The bamboo was to be used in the construction of a fishpen in barangay Poblacion, Samboan town.

After they took care of the delivery in barangay Poblacion, Samboan town, Legarte together with Lepaña's son Arnold, 26 and Demetrio Carollo Jr., 18, also of Legaspi, Alegria, boarded the motorcycle.

But while they were negotiating a curve along the national highway in barangay Guiwanon in Ginatilan town on their way home to Alegria, the driver failed to control the handlebars of his motorcycle and it swerved and flipped over on its side several times.

Omaña said all the victims were thrown off the vehicle.

All the victims were immediately transported by a passing vehicle owned by the National Transmission Corporation to the M.J. Cuenco Memorial Hospital in Malabuyoc town.

Lepaña and his son Arnold and Legarte sustained only minor injuries while Carollo died upon reaching the hospital after sustaining a serious head injury.

Lepaña is temporaily detained at the Ginatilan police station pending the filing of charges against him. - Flor Z. Perolina
