But Angelo Verdan, who assumed office last Monday, said that with or without the summit, the security of passengers and vessels has been in place. He added that he expected no sea traffic of the summit delegates as they are all traveling to Cebu by air.
He also stressed that the seaport security is the responsibility of the Maritime Police.
During the weekly 888 News Forum held at the Parklane Hotel yesterday, Verdan thanked his predecessor, Mariano Martinez, for taking steps aimed at improving the Cebu ports such as the building of a passenger terminal and the procurement of baggage x-ray machines.
Verdan explained that the only order from President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo was for them to enhance the nautical highway project in the province, including that of Bantayan and Camotes islands.
The general manager explained that his stint at the helm of the Mactan Cebu International Airport could be of great help in the implementation of security measures at the seaport.
Verdan said he is more concerned on the problem of informal settlers near the port that needs to be addressed by the local government. - Gregg M. Rubio/LPM
