Dalaguete Mayor Ronald Allan Cesante said that the installation of the P1.5-million tramline will be done in January to allow the easy transport of vegetables from the mountain barangays to the Poblacion.
"This is for the farmers from mountainous barangays so that they could easily transport farm products to the market," Cesante said.
Aside from the said system, the municipality has also installed the cold chain facility wherein some 25,000 to 35,000 kilos of various vegetables like cabbage, carrots, pechay, tomatoes, onions and potatoes, are delivered daily at the farmers' vegetable trading center or "bagsakan" in barangay Mantalongon.
The cold chain facility is seen to help prevent the loss of about 100 kilos of vegetables that go to waste due to improper handling, and the use of the traditional storage and transport system.
Such is a joint venture of the municipal government of Dalaguete, DAR, Bureau of Post-harvest Research and Extension, and the provincial government of Cebu.
The municipality is considered the vegetable basket of Central Visayas, supplying an average of 60 tons of vegetables per day to neighboring cities and islands. - Jasmin R. Uy
