School officials promise to help cleanliness drive

School officials in Borbon town have vowed support for the municipal government's cleanliness drive by encouraging residents to construct their own comfort rooms to avoid the resurgence of the typhoid fever outbreak that had affected more than 200 people last month.

According to Mayor Neil Vergara, the school officials have assured him that they would educate the students about the importance of cleanliness and would endorse the clean and green project of the municipal government in every barangay.

He said his office would tap the Department of Education on the preparation of the criteria for the town's clean and green contest.

"Nahukman nato karon nga ilambigit ang mga magtutudlo sa matag barangay pag-edukar sa katawhan nga importante gayud kaayo ang ilang pagpanglimpyo," Vergara said.

Vergara said they are now encouraging the town residents to construct their own comfort rooms, and are considering requiring would-be couples to first construct comfort room before getting married.

The contamination of water sources in the town that resulted in the typhoid fever outbreak was due to the lack of comfort rooms by the residents, said municipal health officer Dr. Corazon Dotillos during the special session of the municipal council called by Vergara last Friday.

The municipal council had declared the town under a state of calamity following the outbreak. - Jose P. Sollano
