Borbon seeking measures to avoid typhoid outbreaks

The typhoid outbreak in Borbon town that downed more than 200 people prompted town officials to seek measures to prevent a repeat of the incident, they are considering requiring would-be couples to construct a comfort room first before getting married.

Association of Barangay Councils president, Laaw barangay captain Ambrosio Ursal, made the suggestion last Thursday during the special session called by Mayor Neil Vergara.

Municipal Health Officer Corazon Dotillos reported to the municipal council that the contamination of all water sources in the town was because of the lack of comfort rooms of the residents. Barangay captains confirmed this during the meeting.

Municipal councilor Roy Melgo said barangay captains may summon the residents and warn them of legal action if they refused to coordinate regarding the construction of comfort rooms.

But Vice Mayor Bernard "Butch" Sepulveda, said there is a need for them to conduct further study of the proposal as the municipal council may apply the existing ordinance related to the code of sanitation.

He said the council should review the existing ordinance and those requirements under Presidential Decree NO. 856, the Code on Sanitation. - Jose P. Sollano
