Man drowns in river

Tropical storm "Kiko" claimed last Wednesday afternoon the life of a 68-year-old farmer who was carried away by strong currents while crossing a river in Minglanilla town.

Residents of barangay Tongkil fished out the body of Bonifacio Gimenez, of barangay Cuanos from the sea a few hours after a heavy downpour.

Residents even rushed him immediately to the Minglanilla District Hospital but Gimenez did not reach the hospital alive.

Bruises and contusions covered Gimenez's face, arms, and knees.

In Carmen town, a motorcycle-for-hire driver was shot dead and believed to have been robbed by his passenger while it was raining hard Wednesday afternoon.

The victim was identified as Aurelio Lozano, 19, a resident of barangay Cogon East in Carmen. He was found lifeless in a secluded area in the mountain barangay of Baring.

A resident told police that Lozano was seen passing by earlier with a passenger but hours later fellow drivers found him already dead with a gunshot wound on his back.

His motorcycle, mobile phone, and wallet with undetermined amount were missing. - Ryan P. Borinaga
