According to Mandaue City Mayor Thadeo Ouano, barangay officials and different sectors of Mandaue City suggested to him that the city government should put up a public college.
Ouano admitted that many high school graduates in Mandaue City cannot attend college because of high tuition fees.
For every 30 students who graduate high school, it is said that only ten of will continue their studies in college.
The city mayor said when he assumed office in l998, he prioritized education by allocating funds for the construction of elementary school buildings.
However, not all barangays have their own schools as in the cases of barangays Alang-Alang and Mantuyong, although students here have easy access to the City Central Elementary School in barangay Centro.
At present, he said there are at least eleven high schools giving better quality education to the residents in the different barangays.
Ouano still acknowledged the problems a student faces after graduating high school.
"Mao kini karon ang tinguha nato nga mahatagan sa dinalian nga pagtagad mao nga tinguha nato nga matukod ang usa ka public college sa Mandaue," Mayor Ouano said.
This is why we are giving priority to the establishment of a public college in Mandaue.
He said he will ask the city council to fast track the approval of an ordinance creating the city public college as basis of appropriating funds for the project. - Jose P. Sollano
