CEBU, Philippines - Pinoys definitely have a lot of peculiarities. Like those instances when we Pinoys don’t have to use words to actually say anything and understand each other.

When we want to direct people to a certain object, person or place, we use our lips to point it out.

When we like the food we’re eating, we don’t waste our breath exclaiming, “Mmm, this is delicious!”… we just set aside the spoon and fork and gamely and eagerly use our hands to eat.

When we chance upon people we know, we don’t say “Ei, wassup! How ‘ya doin’!”… we just nod our heads and it already means that we’ve acknowledge them and greeted them with enthusiasm.

When we don’t know the answer, we don’t need to form sentences to excuse ourselves because we can just scratch our heads and more often than not others will just forgive our ignorance with a smile.

We also put our hands together in front of us and gesture as if to make a path instead of uttering excuses when we’re passing between people or in front of the TV.

Indeed, we Pinoys are non-verbal folks and tend to say things more through our actions.

Like when we’re in a crowded bar. We just draw a rectangle in the air and we’ll surely catch the attention of the waitresses no matter how busy they are.

Lately though, the use of the “chit” sign have gone through a major transformation. For it is now being used to order bottles of San Miguel Pale Pilsen. And the people who are responsible for this change were none other than the wacky barkada of Vic Sotto, Michael V., Derek Ramsay and Efren “Bata” Reyes by way of the latest TV commercial of San Miguel Pale Pilsen.

Remember that simple story. They arrived at a busy bar eager to have their favorite drink but the waitresses kept on ignoring them in favor of all those people asking for the bill. And so, Vic thought of flashing the “chit” sign which immediately caught the attention of a waitress and used the opportunity to order San Miguel Pale Pilsen.

The transformed use of the “chit” sign has stuck since then. Now when you go to bars and grills all over the country, you’ll surely see people flashing the “chit” sign as soon as they arrive to order their favorite San Miguel Pale Pilsen. So try doing it the next time you go out drinking with your barkada. And enjoy the extra attention. (FREEMAN)
