Cebu Fish Spa

“The idea of the Cebu Fish Spa was conceived in early February when a friend of mine had invited me to try out this exotic idea outside of Cebu,” shares Keith Coyoca, the CEO of Cebu Fish Spa and also a graduate of the Cebu Doctors’ College with a degree of Bachelor of Science in Biology. “I began by laying out my proposal to my family members and got an approval from our biggest financer. From there, the search for a nice venue was on and the business started.”

Cebu Fish Spa is the Coyoca’s family business where each and everyone play an important role. “We officially opened at the end of May 2011. My dad is the Operations Manager, my mom is the Financial Manager, my brother Kirk is the marketer, my sister Kareen is the proprietor, my other sister Karmiel is our financier and my aunt Ada Marie is our accountant”.

Cebu Fish Spa boasts of using the only Authentic Garra Rufa (Doctor Fish or Nibble Fish). “We import these species from Malaysia but they originally live and breed in the outdoor pools of Turkish spas. The fish only consume the affected and dead areas of the skin, leaving the healthy skin to grow”, Keith explains. “These creatures work together as a team to improve skin conditions through natural exfoliation by removing dead skin cells and constantly nibbling on the skin areas while producing enzyme secretions to allow newer skin to regenerate. Plus, it tickles your feet and gives you a tingling sensation as opposed to feeling painful. Their strong nibbling ability has been the signature of this treatment for many many years.”

It is also known fact that back in 1917, a shepherd dipped his wounded leg into a pool of water where these fish, measuring a little less than four inches, nibbled off the dead skin, which eventually led his wound to heal faster. Though there are still no medical claims to these Doctor Fish, it is believed to be a wonderful option for diabetics, as well. The relationship between man and the doctor fish is equally beneficial for both sides.

Keith also shares that these fish originate from the Carp family, where they are commonly found in hot springs with temperatures reaching up to 42 degrees Celsius! “This can also be an explanation as to why these fish are free from any form of diseases in such an environment.”
