CEBU, Philippines - SKAL, an international organization that brings together all sectors of the travel and tourism industry was introduced in the Philippines in 1953 with the founding of SKAL Club of the Philippines. This later became the SKAL Club of Manila in August 28, 1981 then later gave birth to the SKAL Club of Makati. In 1990, the SKAL Club of Cebu was chartered with Charles Lim as its founding president.
Recently, the 40 dedicated and driven members of SKAL Cebu celebrated its 20th anniversary with an intimate, low key celebration at the Pavilion of the Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort and Spa. Joaquim Schutte, general manager, and soon to be member of the club, amiably hosted the event.
Charles Lim, once again at the helm of the club, addressed the members and guests with inspirational remarks and expounded on the significance of the upcoming event, the 39th SKAL Asian Congress, that will be held in Cebu come May 27 to May 30, 2010.
The objective of the congress is to provide a framework of cooperation and understanding among the clubs and to facilitate collaboration between its members that would advance their goals and objectives in regard to working with the tourism players.
A lot of cultural and other interesting events are also planned and the tours will give participants the chance to explore our beautiful islands. It is only by attending the Congress that members can understand the internationality of SKAL, experience the richness the different cultures bring and feel they belong to the large family of this tourism oriented club.
SKAL today has approximately 22,000 members in 500 clubs throughout 90 nations. It is a unique international tourist organization for all ages and all periods of life.
It is a privilege and honor for SKAL Cebu to host the Asian Congress for the second time in its 20 years of existence. The gathering of tourism players from different countries in Asia will surely help promote the Philippines and Cebu in particular for the Asian market.
