Fair Trade Shop Cebu Opens

CEBU, Philippines - Last August 8, the first The Fair Trade Shop Philippines opened its doors to the public, signaling the start of the country’s fair trade movement to venture into the local market.

The first of eight shops to be opened across the country, The Fair Trade Shop showcases products made by local farmers and producers who have committed to abide by the principles of fair trade. These principles include fair wage, fair price, transparency and accountability, care for the environment, capacity building, gender equity, creation of opportunities to the marginalized sector, no child labor, safe working condition, and promotion of fair trading.

Geraldine Labradores, general manager of Southern Partners and Fair Trade Corp. (SPFTC), said that the opening of the shop will welcome a positive change for producers “who need fair trade now more than ever.”

“By opening The Fair Trade Shop, we can further improve the living standards and conditions for farmers, workers and producers, and create a sustainable supply of high quality products for conscious consumers to enjoy,” added Vicente Roaring, executive director of the Advocate of Philippine Fair Trade, Inc.

The Fair Trade Shop boasts of an improved product display, classifying products for easy browsing by the client; better lighting that enhances the presentation of the products; and a more spacious area that beckons passersby to take a peak and eventually go in. The white and mint green color combination adds a refreshing air to the shop. The improvements ensure that emphasis will be put on the products, inviting guests to experience them before they decide to purchase. Plans of putting up the first brewed fair trade coffee vending machine is on the drawing board, and is expected to materialize by the end of the year.

Ester Gamboa, APFTI’s advocacy officer, revealed that the shops will be run in partnership with local organizations. Here in Cebu, SPFTC will manage the shop to be assisted by APFTI through its national programs like the Made For Fair Trade campaign.

The Fair Trade Shop is located at 102 Jose R. Martinez Bldg., Osmeña Blvd., Cebu City (right beside Maybank).
