CEBU, Philippines - Forty U.P. High School Cebu alumni went to Barangay Ermita on April 18, 2009 to paint murals with the theme “Kabataan: Kagahapon, Karon, ug Ugma”. One wall depicted the first campus of U.P. Cebu established on May 3, 1918, as Junior College of Liberal Arts, in Warwick Barracks.
Barangay Ermita wanted to feature the heritage of their place and sought out the help of U.P. in doing so. Dr. Madrileña de la Cerna of U.P. Cebu College provided the group with a photograph of the 1918 Warwick Barracks school.
Most of those who lent their artistic talents were from the youngest alumni batch, Class of 2009, who graduated on April 15, 2009. It was a fitting welcome for them into the alumni, to be of service, and to go back to where it all started for U.P. Cebu 101 years later.
“This is our way of thanking U.P., and we look forward to the next 101 years of our alma mater, the U.P. High School Cebu,” said Gener Aviso of Class 2009.
This event was sponsored by the Barangay Ermita Sangguniang Kabataan, and made possible through the leadership of Leizl Rances of Class 2001 with the help of Euvic Ferrer and Nico Martin Eñego, both from Class 2007, with lead artists Carla Erika Lagrana and John Raye Tomas of Class 2007 and 2008, respectively.
