Any fashion insider knows that it’s through fabric development that you can divine what’s next in fashion and what will come down the runway in 2008. Most designers though opt for what comes out of the textile mill then whip up an entire collection of what’s available or what caught his fancy. Not this designer. The ever youthful Felix Yu has been whipping up entire collections from fabrics that he manufactured all on his own.
Consider his Samsung Metrowear collection, as well as his Sposabella bridal ensemble. The latter focuses on the Cebu lace. It’s more cottony than its foreign counterparts so it’s more suitable in our tropical climate. The maestro of style is also a great fabric innovator. His penchant for mixing luxurious fabrics with embellished Cebu lace make his brand of haute couture modernistic and a bit quirky. And yes, the mind-boggling pleating technique he employs in most of his pieces baffles even the keenest of fashion cognoscenti.
This is actually Felix Yu’s hallmark: irreverence mixed with industry. Irreverence for generally appealing fabrics and a painstaking approach to cut and silhouette. Look closely at the fashion spread and one can get the general idea. So what’s next? “I’m into more fabric innovations. I don’t want to unveil anything unless it’s completely new!” Indeed, brave pronouncements from the Maestro of Style!
